GMI promotes from within for rejigged leadership team
Gareth Jones has been appointed as group managing director of the Leeds-based construction firm, stepping up from divisional managing director for the Midlands.
His promotion follows the news in July that chief executive Lee Powell will become managing director at Henry Boot Construction from January 2025.
Jones will now lead the business alongside new group commercial director Richard Davies, previously commercial director of the Midlands.
With the pair working together, the Midlands division has flourished, GMI said, contributing in excess of £85m towards group revenues, with notable projects for MIRA Technology Park, St Francis Developments, Trebor Developments, Evans Property Group and Alumno.
Jones has more than 20 years’ experience in construction, starting as a trainee site engineer while studying. He then spent 12 years at Galliford Try, progressing to project management roles before the age of 24.
Jones joined GMI as construction manager, before spending two years as construction director for the Midlands before being promoted to divisional MD.
Established in Leeds in the 1980s, GMI has in recent years become a more geographically diverse business, opening a Manchester office in 2018, its Midlands office in Birmingham in 2019, and launching its North East division in Stockton-on-Tees in 2021.
Jones said: “Our contribution to the development of the built environment in Yorkshire, the North East, North West, and the Midlands continues to be an essential part of the UK economy, through the creation of employment opportunities, new homes, and business premises.”
Jarrod Best, GMI chairman said: “This is an incredibly well-deserved appointment. Gareth has done a fantastic job delivering for multiple regions and is an asset to the team.
“Gareth’s dedication and strategic approach to growth will drive the profitable consolidation we are focusing on and will ensure our projects are delivered to a high standard. A huge congratulations to Gareth and we look forward to the new era of GMI.”
