Banks submits Shepley plans
The developer is looking to build 110 homes on a site in Eastfield and if approved, expects to start construction in 2027.
Alongside housing, the Shepley development would include a play area, public open space, green corridors, and 35% affordable housing.
Located south of Huddersfield, plans have been submitted to Kirklees Council and Banks is hopeful they will be reviewed early next year.
Jamilah Hassan, community relations manager at Banks Group, says: “The provision of private and affordable homes through this development will give more local people and families a greater opportunity to stay in the village, while creating new wildlife habitats and new areas of public open space around the development will encourage and enhance local biodiversity…
“We are confident there would be significant demand for new homes on this development and hope the members of Kirklees Council’s planning committee will support it when it comes before them next year.”
Knowing Shepley as I do, I can see how the proposed development might benefit Banks Property (based in Durham) but it’s unclear how it would benefit our lovely (but under-resourced) village.
Allegedly improving bio-diversity by 10% is all well and good but at what cost? Does Banks Property care? I suspect not.

The proposed building of 110 houses in Shepley by a company based in Durham is ludicrous. There is serious risk to business for Shepley Spring of water contamination in the natural underground springs.
Yorkshire Water has already said the infrastructure is not up to coping with the extra demand.
The Health Center is worried as they are already swamped, the school is at capacity and there are serious issues with traffic.
Added to that there is no proper access to the land for heavy plant vehicles.
According to Banks, Shepley has a supermarket – it’s a small Co-op, no parking, no trolleys and a veg counter approximately 3 feet wide.
Banks’s blurb sounds amazing but its very far from being sound on the details.
