Doncaster Sheffield Airport reopening reaches key milestone
The Civil Aviation Authority has approved the next stage of the airport’s airspace application process.
As the next stage, a public consultation will begin on the proposed Airspace Change Proposal, a regulatory requirement that must be completed before the airport can regain controlled airspace needed to support commercial flight operations.
The consultation will run from 3 August to 4 October, giving residents, businesses and other stakeholders the opportunity to review the proposals and submit feedback through an online portal or at a series of public engagement events.
Consultation documents will also be available at 14 locations across the local area.
Reinstating controlled airspace is a critical milestone in the wider programme to bring Doncaster Sheffield Airport back into operation, with the outcome of the consultation informing the next stage of the CAA’s approval process.
The airport’s proposed reopening is expected to unlock wider investment opportunities across the surrounding site, supporting employment, logistics, commercial development and future infrastructure projects linked to the South Yorkshire economy, and will be the focus of a panel session at the South Yorkshire Development Update in September.
Christian Foster, director for FlyDoncaster Ltd, operators of DSA said: “A reopening project of this scale includes a number of important milestones, but being able to go out to public consultation around our airspace is one that is absolutely crucial.
“We want to hear the views of people from across Doncaster and beyond, so that they can have a meaningful say about the airspace connected to this airport.
“As a community asset, it’s vital that we engage with those who live and work nearby to us and ensure we listen to the views of local people.
“Reaching another milestone in this process allows us to accelerate the good work that has already been done to engage with airlines and operators, helping to ensure that we can reopen the airport in a safe and successful manner.
“We continue to build an expert team to help us do that and we look forward to hearing the views expressed during the consultation.”
