ECF looks to press on with Oastler demolition
Avison Young has submitted an application on behalf of the public-private partnership, to get the ball rolling with its plans for Bradford City Village.
The demolition of the Oastler shopping centre, the adjoining vacant Morrisons supermarket, and multi-storey car park in the Westgate area of the city will make way for 64 two- and three-bedroom townhouses, arranged around a series of courtyards and green spaces.
This will form part of Bradford City Village, which will in total comprise around 900 city centre homes across three sites: Kirkgate, Oastler, and Chain Street.
All three of the buildings to be demolished are owned by the council.
Located to the north of the city centre, the Oastler centre is essentially an indoor market, which will be relocated to the new Darley Street Market building in July.
The Demolition Specification was prepared by Curtin’s, and it is expected that much of the demolished building’s materials will be crushed and used as site-fill.
Historically, the site was used as a stone quarry up until the 19th century, before it was infilled and used as an outdoor market.
In the 1970s, the site was developed into the current shopping centre, which underwent a refurbishment in the early 2000’s.
A decision will be officially made by Bradford Council by mid-July, although a refusal would be a huge surprise.
