WD puts Huddersfield’s Kingsgate Centre up for sale

Cushman & Wakefield has been appointed to sell the 280,000 sq ft shopping centre, with a price tag of £36.25m.

Anchored by Sports Direct, TK Maxx, and recently opened cinema The Light, the centre generates a gross income of around £4.5m per year and has a mix of retail, F&B, and leisure outlets, as well as a 650-space car park.

The centre sits within the town’s Our Cultural Heart regeneration project, as it is next to the Piazza centre, which is being demolished to make way for a food hall, library, and community square.

Phase one is being carried out by Bam Construction and is expected to complete next spring.

WD Ltd developed the centre after winning a tender from the council, and opened in 2002.

A £7m loan made in 2021 from Kirklees Council’s Property Investment Fund was supposed to be repaid in July this year, although an application has been made to extend the loan by a year.

The loan extension is expected to be approved at a council meeting next week.
