Developers don’t need to build social value alone – colleges are ready to do the heavy lifting

The developer and masterplanner of the 1m sq ft mixed-use estate to the east of Leeds, is looking to add a 90,000 sq ft educational facility to its roster.

Led by GSS Architecture, the project sees the upper floors of the building refurbished for the University of Leeds, with proposals seeking to transform vacant space into a conference and events facility.

The college hosted the recent round of the competition and of the 78 students that took part, LCB students secured 13 of the top 27 spots available. 

Following the submission of plans in February, Sewell Construction will be able to crack on with the 44,000 sq ft two-storey building later this year following final sign-off from the Department for Education. 

As the construction industry continues to face skills shortages, stronger collaboration and a two-way flow between education and industry is more important than ever. A roundtable hosted by Leeds College of Building explored how colleges, employers, and government can best work together to build the workforce needed for future growth. 

The council has opened the National Centre for Digital Technologies, building on the first phase of development, which opened earlier this year as part of Barnsley’s growing digital sector and town centre regeneration plans.

The money will be used to refurbish the recently acquired 55,000 sq ft former Vodafone site next to its North Street Campus.
