At a panel event hosted by Place North and sponsored by Trowers & Hamlins and Studio Hoodless, leading figures from the development industry in both nations came together to discuss how they are working to deliver on bold visions and create new kinds of cities.

Persimmon’s plans for up to 308 houses and Taylor Wimpey’s 137-property estate are both set to be approved at the council’s planning meeting later this week. 

Following a standout debut, Place Yorkshire is returning to Hull on 14 May to explore the projects, trends, and industries powering East Yorkshire. 

The council is expected to push forward with plans that could pave the way for a major regeneration programme around Elland Road Stadium, with the potential to unlock more than £2bn of investment in South Leeds.

What creates the conditions for a successful regeneration project in practical terms? While councils and developers need vision, ambition, and – of course – funding, the success of many schemes is often underpinned by effective planning that helps bring complex projects forward.

Kirklees Council has invested around £1.5m in preservation and remedial works so far, and would now like a partner to deliver 53 apartments at the grade two-listed property. 

The prominent 147,000 sq ft building sits in the main retail heart of the city, directly opposite the planned £96m regeneration of Albion Square and within the council’s wider £19.5m programme to revitalise the city centre. 

The plan is for the removal of the city-centre eyesore to make way for a mixed-use scheme providing around 200 homes and commercial space, while retaining the Three Ships Mural. 

The developer will build a £53m estate on 16 acres in Bessacarr, adding 184 homes to South Yorkshire’s housing stock.
