Harrogate College gets the go-ahead

Luminate Education Group has been given permission to demolish its main building and replace it with a teaching block and a workshop, with Caddick Construction appointed as main contractor on the £22m project.

The wider project team includes planners Nineteen47 and architect firm Race Cottam Associates.

Located on Hornbeam Park Avenue, the 6.5-acre plot will house a new main building on part of the existing car park in the south east corner of the site, which will measure around 43,000 sq ft GIA.

The current main collage block has fallen into disrepair, and planning documents note the replacement block will be almost 22,000 sq ft smaller in size but more efficient and streamlined.

The workshop will be a renewable energy technology centre, located to the east of the site alongside two existing technology blocks.

The new technical building will comprise roughly 10,500 sq ft (GIA) and will offer courses in priority growth sectors for North Yorkshire, such as advanced manufacturing, low carbon construction, retrofit, sustainable energy, health science, and hospitality.

Improved facilities will include a mock hospital ward, a digital technology suite, an electric vehicle workshop, and a construction centre focused on modern building methods.

Funding for the project has mainly come from a £20m grant from the Department for Education, with the remaining £2m sourced from Luminate Education Group, of which the college is a member.

Construction is due to begin on the rebuild in the coming months, and scheduled to complete on time for the 2026 academic year.
