Caddick on track to deliver for Schneider Electric

January 2025 is inked in for completion of the energy management specialist’s £42m manufacturing facility in Scarborough.

The 177,540 sq ft facility at Scarborough Business Park has been developed by Caddick, which has also acted as principal contractor throughout the construction phase, which reaches the topping-out stage this week.

The Harris Partnership is the scheme’s architect, with Vectos also advising.

Schneider Electric will relocate from its existing facility just 500m away, with the new base tripling the company’s local footprint.

Schneider also triggered a £7.5m upgrade of its Leeds facility in 2023.

More than 200 jobs will be created by the Scarborough expansion, Schneider said, as it looks to meet increased demand for electrical equipment in the UK’s drive towards cleaner power. The firm currently employs 450 people locally.

The site is intended to be net-zero in Scope 1 and 2 emissions when it opens in early 2025, with a third of its required power coming from a rooftop solar system. BREEAM Excellent is being targeted, and there will be 30 EV charge points on site.

Kelly Becker, President at Schneider Electric, UK & Ireland, Belgium & Netherlands, said: “Sustainability is at the core of our purpose, culture and business. We’re proud to be investing in and developing innovative solutions which will deliver immediate and lasting decarbonisation in the UK, while bolstering the creation of local, green jobs in Yorkshire.

“The region has long been part of our operational presence in the UK, and we’re excited to expand this as part of our commitment to investing in the UK’s green economy. The new facility in Scarborough represents a pillar of innovation in net-zero, and one which will be an industry benchmark for the transition to sustainable, energy efficient buildings.”

Caddick director Alistair Smith said: “Schneider Electric’s expansion will deliver much-needed jobs for Scarborough and its commitment to the net-zero agenda will ensure that this facility operates as a gold standard for sustainable growth and energy efficiency.”

Group-wide, Schneider Electric employs 5,000 people in the UK and Ireland. Globally, it closed 2023 with a turnover of €36bn. Headquartered in London, there are a further 13 operational sites across the UK specialising in energy management solutions including automation and control, electrical distribution and building management.
