Avant gets ball rolling on 500-home Arcadia plans
The site in Burmantofts, Leeds, formerly the home of clothing giant Burton, could also see 8.6 acres assigned as employment land, with public green space also in the masterplan.
A consultation process has now been launched for the Arcadia site as the masterplan is put together.
The site, which is allocated in the Leeds Local Plan as a site for homes and employment, has a storied past, from its roots as the home of Burton Tailors, and later Arcadia. It was noce Leeds’ largest single employer, with 10,500 employees.
Closed in 2021, the site had in its later years been used as a distribution centre for Arcadia brands such as Dorothy Perkins, before Arcadia’s decline.
Hudson Road was the heart of Montague Burton’s empire, being selected due to Leeds having excellent access to skilled tailors and machinists.
Avant, which bought the site in 2022, said that its ambition is to carefully respect this heritage with a range of sensitive proposals throughout the redevelopment of the scheme.
Apartments and townhouses are the dominant house types, with six neighbourhood areas mapped out in the emerging masterplan.
A community drop-in event has been organised on Thursday 7 November from 1pm to 7pm at Community Learning Partnerships’ offices at Hudson Road.
Online consultation is now open, and can be accessed at this link.
Responses are requested by Friday 15 November at the latest, prior to the submission of a hybrid planning application before the end of the year.
Matt Oldfield, managing director at Avant Homes North Yorkshire, said: “We’re very much looking forward to speaking with the community over the consultation period about our emerging plans for the Arcadia site. Throughout this process, we’re encouraging everyone to get involved and have their say to help shape elements of the masterplan.
“We’re proud of our vision for the site, which will deliver much-needed new homes, land for jobs and skills growth, along with public spaces for the community to relax and enjoy.”
