Aureos breaks ground at £45m Howden Relief Road

Work on one of East Yorkshire’s largest construction projects has officially started, following the appointment of the contractor in June.

The road will reduce congestion by diverting heavy traffic away from the centre of Howden, hopefully reducing accidents, lowering emission, and improving travel times.

A link road will be built between the A614 Thorpe Road and B1228 Station Road, with four roundabouts, on what is currently farmland.

Work is scheduled to take two years to complete and is being funded through a mix of council packages via Invest East Yorkshire, including a £2m Devolution Grant and a £1m Local Transport Grant, and developer contributions.

The road is part of a wider  planning application called HOW-G by JG Hatcliffe Associates to develop the area north of Howden with a 460,000 sq ft factory and up to 1,800 homes.

Cllr Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “This relief road is a vital piece of infrastructure, to ease congestion and help local residents.

“It will allow HGV traffic to avoid the town centre, to the benefits of motorists, residents and businesses in Howden.

“We’re proud to invest in infrastructure in our region, to improve transportation links and facilitate economic growth.”
