East Yorkshire appoints £45m Howden road contractor
Aureos has been named on the relief road, which has been designed to reduce congestion in the town centre and is part of a wider planning application by JG Hatcliffe Associates to develop the area north of Howden with a 460,000 sq ft factory and up to 1,800 homes.
The road will divert heavy traffic away from the town centre and will include the construction of a link road between the A614 Thorpe Road and B1228 Station Road, as well as four roundabouts, on agricultural land.
The Sheffield-based firm will start work at the beginning of July and work will take around two years to complete.
Preparation works began in July last year, including the creation of access roads and a pavement for the contractor to use, as well as alternative access for the farm.
The relief road project will be funded through a mix of developer contributions and council funding via Invest East Yorkshire, including a £2m devolution grant and a £1m local transport grant.
The aim for the road is to reduce accidents, lower carbon emissions, and improve commuting times.
The wider planning application for the site was passed unanimously by East Yorkshire council in 2023, with joinery group Howdens to build a 460,000 sq ft factory on its home-turf, designed by UMC Architects.

Cllr Gary McMaster, the council’s cabinet member for planning, housing and infrastructure, said: “I’m extremely pleased we have now awarded this contract and that work will soon begin on this transformational project for Howden.
“This relief road will significantly improve connectivity and ease congestion, giving HGV traffic a different route to avoid the town centre, for the benefit of both motorists, residents and businesses in Howden.
“Local officials have expressed optimism about the project’s impact and its role in boosting the region’s development.
“This initiative is part of wider aspirations to enhance infrastructure in Yorkshire and the Humber, ensuring smoother transportation and grow the economy.”
