Kirklees plots 211,000 sq ft innovation scheme at former gasworks

The UK’s renewed focus on new towns is prompting fresh debate about how to create places that thrive for generations. At a panel session hosted by Place North, industry leaders were tasked with a thought experiment: how would they design a settlement from scratch?

HBC is reworking a former office building into a 36,000 sq ft oncology, haematology, and research centre for client GenesisCare. 

Mayors, city leaders, and Combined Authority officials from across the Midlands, the North of England, and Scotland used a roundtable hosted by Place North to argue that the UK’s next wave of growth will be driven by regional cities, highlighting opportunities in AI, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, and housing, while calling for deeper devolution and stronger infrastructure investment.

Eleven new healthcare facilities will be delivered under the Hospital 2.0 Alliance, including Airedale General Hospital. 

A £32m elective care building will be delivered by Kier Construction on behalf of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust. 

The West Yorkshire Combined Authority will provide the council with the grant to drive innovation and support businesses in the health, wellbeing, and digital sectors.

Located at the emerging Southern Gateway, which will double the size of the city centre, the former Kingfisher House on Jinnah Business Park is to become a Standard Health Hospital. 

The construction firm has redesigned the layout of Maple Ward to create 17 en-suite bedrooms and a landscaped garden courtyard, among other works, at the Longley Centre. 

The developer, alongside JG Bellerby (Farms), has applied to North Yorkshire Council for a mixed-use scheme on land south of Grainbeck Lane in the village, consisting of around 130 homes and a health centre.
