Govt promises increased trains between North Yorkshire hotspots

Additional peak services are set to be introduced on the York–Scarborough corridor as part of wider capacity enhancements across the North of England.

Currently served by an hourly timetable operated by TransPennine Express, the route will see the introduction of two additional services during morning and evening peaks from December 2028, aimed at improving commuter capacity and network resilience.

The service uplift follows recommendations outlined in David Blunkett’s £14bn White Rose Plan for Rail, and reflects ongoing collaboration between regional transport authorities and mayoral combined authorities.

The additional services are expected to be among the first delivered under Great British Railways, the new brand for the nationalisation of rail services in the UK, supporting the government’s efforts for a unified, publicly owned operating structure.

Operationally, the enhancements will integrate with the planned reopening of Haxby railway station, while also complementing major infrastructure schemes including the TransPennine Route Upgrade and Northern Powerhouse Rail.

Together, these interventions are intended to deliver increased capacity, improved journey times and stronger regional economic links across the North.

The extra trains will run at 6.35am and 5.35pm from York to Scarborough, and at 7.30am and 6.30pm from Scarborough to York.

David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire, said: “Giving people more options for getting to and from work, study, and school has been at the heart of our work to boost the number of trains between Scarborough and York.

“For too long, commuters have needed more flexibility, and these extra morning and evening services are a major step towards our goal of a half-hourly service connecting the coast to the city.”
