Plans submitted for affordable housing scheme in Bridlington
The proposed estate would be built on 13 acres of agricultural land off Bempton Lane, north of Nostell Way, delivered by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
The development will comprise a mix of one to four-bedroom affordable homes, providing both social rented and intermediate shared ownership properties.
The scheme is being funded through East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Housing Revenue Account alongside grant funding from Homes England’s Affordable Homes Programme.
The planning application has been prepared by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Infrastructure and Facilities team, which is acting as lead consultant and architect for the project.
Design proposals have been developed to integrate the scheme with the surrounding residential area while retaining existing landforms, trees, and hedgerows wherever possible.
New landscaping and ecological features are also proposed to enhance the site’s environmental quality, with pedestrian, cycle, and vehicle connections linking the development to nearby neighbourhoods, services and employment opportunities.
The application is supported by a Strategic Affordable Housing Need Statement, which highlights continued demand for affordable housing across Bridlington.
Although the town has seen ongoing residential development in recent years, the council says relatively few affordable homes have been delivered: Between 2019 and 2024, just 44 new affordable homes were completed through developments, with a further 25 homes acquired into the council’s housing stock.
Bridlington is identified as a Principal Town within the East Riding Local Plan, with around 3,300 new homes planned across the town during the plan period.
Housing evidence submitted with the application states there is an oversupply of detached and terraced homes, alongside smaller semi-detached properties, while demand continues to outstrip supply for larger family homes, smaller flats, and bungalows.
The council says the scheme will help increase the supply of affordable family housing while contributing towards meeting Bridlington’s longer-term housing needs.
