Hull approves BHS demolition
As part of the wider Albion Square redevelopment the building will be cleared to make way for 200 homes and commercial space, while retaining the grade two-listed Three Ships Mural.
Preparatory works will now begin on the erection of a steel support structure to the rear of the mural and the erection of temporary hoarding to the site boundary.
Hull City Council is currently in the process of securing a development partner to bring the development forward, with a preferred bidder to be announced shortly.
Permission to demolish the structure was granted in 2022 and the process began, with more than 600,000 tonnes of contaminated waste including asbestos removed.
This has resulted in the shell and core of the building being on display since 2024.
Permission to demolish the building was re-applied for last month due to changes in the original masterplan; namely, the addition of an NHS Community Diagnostic Centre on the corner of Albion Street and Bond Street.
Pegasus Group has been enlisted by the council to help with the application, and contractor Vinci will continue to work on site.
The long-stalled scheme has been included in Hull’s City Centre Vision and the city’s Local Plan, and it is now hoped that construction will begin next year and complete by 2031.
