Esh starts work on Elland and West Vale connectivity scheme
The construction firm has has started on a transport and public realm project designed to improve walking and cycling links between the neighbouring town and village in Calderdale.
The project, which received planning approval in November 2024, is intended to provide improved connections between Elland town centre and surrounding communities, while supporting access to the planned new Elland railway station.
Calderdale Council appointed Esh Construction in January 2025 to develop the detailed design for the scheme, working alongside engineering consultancy Fairhurst. Main construction work has now commenced following initial site preparation.
The project includes the construction of two new pedestrian and cycle bridges. In Elland, a bridge crossing the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation will link Park Road, Gas Works Lane and Riverside Park.
The scheme also includes upgrades to existing pedestrian routes and the canal towpath, a new children’s play area and landscaping works.
A second bridge in West Vale will provide a new walking and cycling connection across the River Calder, linking West Vale with Elland via the Calder and Hebble Navigation. A new access route from Stainland Road, running alongside Black Brook, will also be delivered.
Preparatory works currently underway include ground investigations, installation of a crane pad and the construction of pile platforms to facilitate foundation works for the bridge structures.
The scheme has been procured through YORhub’s YORcivil3 framework and is funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority through the West Yorkshire-plus Transport Fund, alongside support from the UK Government’s Transforming Cities Fund.
Steven Garrigan, divisional director at Esh Construction, said: “We are pleased to be working in partnership with Calderdale Council to bring our knowledge and expertise in delivering high-quality public realm schemes to the Elland Access Package.
“Projects like this make a real difference to communities and are a catalyst for future growth and development.
“Throughout the scheme we are committed to making an impact locally by delivering a raft of social value initiatives.
“This will include providing work experience placements, apprenticeship and T Level opportunities on site, donations, volunteering, and reinvesting money into the local economy through responsible procurement.”
