Huddersfield works move into next phase on Transpennine Route Upgrade

A series of road closures will be introduced across the town over the coming months as major civil engineering works progress on the £10bn TRU project.

The traffic management measures will enable bridge reconstruction, viaduct strengthening and station redevelopment works as part of the multi-billion-pound programme to modernise the rail corridor between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds, and York.

Current works include strengthening Huddersfield Viaduct, replacing several bridges to accommodate additional rail lines and overhead line equipment for electrification, and the ongoing redevelopment of Huddersfield station.

The station project, due for completion in early 2027 and led by BAM, Amey, and Arup, will deliver longer platforms, improved accessibility and upgraded passenger facilities.

Elsewhere, bridge reconstruction is continuing in Deighton, including works at Whitacre Street, the A62 Leeds Road, Colliery Bridge, and Colne Bridge Road.

The schemes will create capacity for two additional tracks, allowing fast services to overtake stopping trains while supporting the electrification of the route.

Temporary road closures on Fitzwilliam Street, John William Street, the A641 Bradford Road/Northgate and roads in the Deighton area will allow for utility diversions, bridge demolition, and reconstruction works.
