Barnsley approves glass recycling facility

Planning firm Pegasus is advising Potters-Ballotini on the delivery of Stairfoot Glassworks with architect D5 working on the scheme.

The demolished Hanson’s brickworks site at Stairfoot will now house a glass recycling centre, storage bays, and an office building.

Located at Wombwell Lane, the 16-acre brownfield site will house a processing plant with an internal area of 29,500 sq ft and a height of 16 metres to accommodate the equipment.

A 1,750 sq ft workshop will be attached to the side, and a 1,550 sq ft office building and a 236 sq ft gatehouse will also be constructed.

The entire site, including parking, storage, and loading space, will have a footprint of 43,500 sq ft.

Historically, the site was a brickworks which was demolished and cleared in 2009.

Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council approved the scheme at its meeting on 26 November.

The facility for waste glass recycling will reduce HGV costs, as they will no longer need to travel between the Barnsley and Scunthorpe sites. An estimated  304,000 vehicle miles and 530,000kg of CO2 emissions from road networks will be saved each year.
