And finally… prisoner of war camp goes under the hammer

A World War Two living history museum in Malton is up for sale, with agent Christie & Co expecting ‘substantial offers’ for the attraction.

Located in North Yorkshire, the former POW camp was bought by the current owner in the 1980s.

Built in 1942, the camp was used to accommodate captured Italian soldiers who were put to work on nearby farms.

Polish and German prisoners were later also held there and after all the prisoners had left, the camp was used as accommodation for agricultural workers and, later on, rearing pheasants.

When Mr Johnson bought the site he intended to open a factory but was inspired to preserve the huts after a visit by some Italian men who had been held there.

The original huts are still in place, with each themed around a different aspect of the war, from rationing to U-boats.

Mr Johnson invested £750,000 in his vision and the museum opened in 1987.

Jon Patrick, who is overseeing the sale for Christie & Co, said they had already seen interest since the announcement was made.

He added Eden Camp could appeal to an “international buyer audience” because of its unique particulars.
