£3m funding approved for £45m Crucible Theatre redevelopment
The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has agreed to release the money to Sheffield City Council, which is leading the project with Sheffield Theatres.
The project aims to retain the World Snooker Championship in Sheffield for at least 15 years. The tournament has been held at the Crucible since 1977.
Plans will increase the capacity of the venue’s main stage from 964 seats to 1,500 for the snooker championship and other performances.
Architect Allies and Morrison revealed concept images for the transformed venue in July, with proposals including a redesigned entrance, a balcony overlooking Tudor Square, upgraded foyer spaces, a café and kitchen, and enhanced backstage facilities.
The plans also show a new 1,500-seat “in the round” configuration, representing an increase of more than 50% on the existing capacity.
The redevelopment is intended to modernise the grade two-listed venue while improving visitor and operational facilities. It will also create more flexible performance spaces to accommodate a wider range of productions and events.
The World Snooker Championship already racks up around £6.5m a year for Sheffield’s economy through hotel bookings, restaurants, bars, and local businesses.
The plans for a £45m redevelopment of the iconic theatre form part of a wider investment package worth up to £89m – the hope is that a larger, modernised Crucible will be able to welcome more fans, increase visitor spending, and cement the city’s place as the home of snooker.
