And finally… Emmerdale icon goes under the hammer
The famous Esholt post office building – best known for stealing the limelight as the post office in ITV’s long-running soap – is preparing for its next plot twist as it goes up for auction later this month with a guide price of £200,000.
The grade two-listed West Yorkshire property will make a guest appearance in Pugh’s (part of Eddisons) online auction on 28 January.
The sale follows the recent handover of the post office business itself to local resident and self-confessed Emmerdale fan Helen Myers, who will continue to operate the establishment on a six-year lease that generates around £11,000 a year in rent.
Esholt became soap royalty after Emmerdale relocated from its original filming base in Arncliffe, Littondale in 1976.
The village played host to the show until 1998, with the post office popping up in hundreds of scenes and earning its status as one of the programme’s most recognisable supporting characters.
Pugh director Will Thompson said: “Esholt post office is not only an attractive and characterful building in a sought-after village, but it also has a special place in the hearts of Emmerdale viewers across the country.
“The business sold before Christmas to a new owner who is enthusiastic about running the post office as a real community asset for the people of Esholt – and the auction of the property itself is an exciting opportunity for buyers looking for something genuinely unique.”
An online auction will commence on January 27 and close the next day.
