And finally… losing the plot
The Courtyard by Marriott Sheffield has officially opened its doors – despite sitting quite firmly in Rotherham.
The 150-room hotel stands at the entrance to the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley, a location well known to map-makers and local authorities as Rotherham.
Construction began in 2022, stalled in summer 2023, and finally resumed in January 2025, with the hotel now open and seemingly keen to test the flexibility of municipal boundaries.
Developed by Stapleford Ventures and delivered by RTS Construction and Mansell, the venue will be operated by RBH Hospitality on behalf of Marriott.
Inside, guests will find family and dog-friendly rooms, meeting spaces inspired by the area’s industrial heritage, and at the centre of the hotel is Aspen Restaurant & Bar, named after the original meaning of Waverley – a meadow of quivering aspens – an unexpectedly fitting title, given the hotel’s uncertain civic identity.
The location offers easy access to Meadowhall, Gulliver’s Valley, and the Utilita Arena, and while Sheffield is indeed close by, it remains just far enough away to let geography be a matter of interpretation.
