North Yorkshire set to approve Scarborough Station Gateway
Designed by Align Property Services on behalf of the council, proposals include changes to accessible parking, the taxi rank and drop-off areas, alongside the creation of a pedestrian plaza linking the station with the town centre and the Stephen Joseph Theatre.
The scheme, which was supported by DPP, will retain existing vehicle routes but introduce a dedicated parking and taxi drop-off area, separating vehicles from pedestrians to improve safety and accessibility.
The plans also include improvements to pedestrian areas at the junction of Westborough, Northway, and Valley Bridge Road, with upgraded routes designed to improve connections around the town centre.
New planting, including two additional trees, will be introduced as part of the project, while existing shrubs and planters will be replaced with new seating and planting. Existing mature trees will be retained.
The grade two-listed station building, designed by George Townsend Andrews in 1845, will not be altered, and the adjacent (also grade two-listed) stone retaining wall and wrought iron railings will remain untouched.
Although the site includes a former pedestrian underpass beneath the nearby crossroads, the proposals do not include reopening it, instead focusing on improving surface-level access.
North Yorkshire Council’s planning committee is expected to grant permission for the scheme in line with officers’ recommendation this Thursday 13 August.
