A study has named Hull as the UK’s best place for access to budget supermarkets, with 16.48 per 100,000 people.
The research by property company Sell House Fast found that to be the highest figure in the UK – with the city also performing strongly on wider affordability measures, recording the highest percentage of income left over after annual mortgage payments.
It also has the UK’s sixth-lowest house prices and the 11th-best house price-to-income ratio, according to the research.
Denbighshire ranked second, with 16.43 budget supermarkets per 100,000 residents.
The Welsh county’s six discount supermarkets serve a population of just over 97,000, giving residents easy access to lower-cost grocery shopping.
West Dunbartonshire took third place, with 14.59 budget supermarkets per 100,000 people. The Scottish council area has 13 discount supermarkets serving a population of around 89,000.
Sell House Fast analysed average annual salaries, rents, house price affordability, mortgage costs and the number of budget supermarkets per 100,000 people to identify the UK’s most affordable places to live.
The findings suggest that, as the cost of living continues to influence where people choose to live, proximity to an Aldi or Lidl may be becoming another factor in the property equation.
