West Yorkshire train upgrades come in on time

A series of improvements between Huddersfield and Leeds have been carried out by TransPennine Route Upgrade engineers, completing within the planned four-week window.

More than 3km of track has been replaced, alongside drainage and tunnel work which will allow for further track work in the future.

Foundations were also created for 55 overhead line masts, which will enable more sustainable, electric trains to operate.

Site preparation work has also been carried out in Dewsbury, where the platforms will be made longer to accommodate bigger trains.

With these works complete, the next steps will commence in October and last for three weeks.

Andrew Campbell, sponsor for TRU, said: “With work ramping up across the entire TRU footprint, we’re edging closer to a faster, cleaner railway across West Yorkshire, with strong recent progress made on OLE installation in particular, which will help power electric services in the future.”

Chris Nutton, major projects & TRU director at TransPennine Express, said: “It’s great to see the progress that’s being made by engineers, especially around Batley and Dewsbury, where more foundations have been installed, showing customers the vital upgrades that are coming to West Yorkshire.

“The preparatory work in Dewsbury is an important first step in the upgrades our station will be getting in the coming years as part of TRU.”
