Trio of sports schemes for Sheffield

The city has gone on a health kick, with plans lodged with the council for the demolition and construction of a sports pavilion in Stannington Park, as well as the redevelopment of both Springs and Concord leisure centres.

Designs by Corstorphine & Wright on behalf of the Youth Investment Fund, proposals highlight the deteriorating condition of the existing pavilion, and suggest a single-storey replacement with a flat roof and timber-effect cladding.

The YIF is aiming to improve existing youth provisions at 28 sites across the country and so has opted for a modular solution, which will provide around 2,500 sq ft of indoor space.

The existing sports pitches will remain as they are and a decision is expected by the end of May.

Meanwhile, Sheffield City Council is going to rebuild the Springs Leisure Centre on East Bank Road and the Concord Leisure Centre on Shiregreen Lane.

They will be the first facilities to be rebuilt under the city’s Sport and Leisure Strategy.

The developments will commence late next year, and will be constructed on land adjacent to the existing facilities to avoid disruption for gym-goers.

Both venues are operated by Everyone Active, which also manages eight other facilities in the city, including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, the English Institute of Sport Sheffield, and iceSheffield.

As well as gyms, each centre will have a six-lane, 25 metre pool, a spa, soft-play, a café, changing facilities, parking, and studios for fitness classes.

Springs will also have a five-court sports hall, while Concord will have a 10-court hall.

Both centre will also have co-located healthcare facilities, such as NHS services to do with weight loss, physical rehab, and support to quit smoking.

Cllr Kurtis Crossland, chair of the communities, parks and leisure committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of our residents.

“The new leisure centres will ensure that everyone, regardless of ability or background, has access to top-quality fitness and wellbeing facilities.

“We are committed to making Sheffield a healthier, more active city, and these redevelopments are a major step forward.”
