Dewsbury Arcade set to complete in June
William Birch & Sons is targeting the date ahead of a grand opening in September, following a two-year restoration project on behalf of Kirklees Council.
The council purchased the grade two-listed building in 2020, after it has stood vacant for four years.
Since then, architect BPD, GH Joinery, and Standard Patent Glazing have worked alongside the York-based contractor, who was appointed in February 2024, to bring the arcade back to life.
The £10m project will be the first community-run shopping centre in the UK, and is a collaboration between Dewsbury Neighbourhood Board, the Arcade Group and the council.
The Arcade Group will be responsible for leasing and managing the arcade.
Work is being funded by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Getting Building Fund, the government’s Towns Fund and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
The original opening date of autumn 2025 was delayed due to extensive rot and decay throughout the structure, treatment for which is still to take place.
