And finally… don’t disturb Dracula
Whitby’s 18th century, grade two-listed Old Town Hall is about to be brought back to life through a refurbishment funded by government grants.
Align Property Partners, the council’s building design consultancy, is leading on the project design.
Currently, an outdoor market takes place in the undercroft of the building but due to poor conditions the indoor space hasn’t been used since 2017.
The renovation will see the building’s first floor upgraded, with widened steps to better connect the under croft to Market Place, and will allow Whitby residents to once again use the space for community activities.
The project will be funded from a £17.1m grant awarded to Whitby as part of the government’s Towns Fund, which will deliver a number of schemes including a £10m Maritime Hub to provide training to Whitby’s fishing and maritime industry.
The Old Town Hall building has been one of the town’s most famous heritage assets and a focal point for residents, traders, and toothy-visitors since the 18th century.
