£10m Holmfirth town centre transport scheme completes

Kirklees Council appointed Hessle-based CR Reynolds as main contractor for the £4.4m project in June 2024.

Funded through the West Yorkshire Combined Authority’s Transforming Cities Fund, the scheme has delivered a series of improvements across the town centre aimed at delivering upgrades to parking, pedestrian connectivity, cycling facilities and accessibility.

Works included upgrades to Huddersfield Road Car Park, opposite Holmfirth Library, where additional parking spaces and more accessible disabled parking bays have been provided.

Pedestrian access between Huddersfield Road and Hollowgate has also been reinstated, improving connections through the town centre and access to local businesses.

Elsewhere, the project included improvements to infrastructure and the bridge over the River Holme, as well as works to boundary walls and access to the river.

New paving, tactile paving for visually impaired pedestrians, kerbing, drainage and pedestrian crossings have also been installed.

Secure cycle facilities and improvements to public spaces formed part of the wider programme.

Cllr John Hardie, Kirklees Council cabinet member for regeneration, highways, and transport said: “I am pleased to see these works are finally complete. We recognise the scheme has taken longer than expected and would like to thank residents, businesses, and visitors for their patience throughout the programme.

“Holmfirth is a thriving town with a strong independent business community, and we hope these improvements will support the town for many years to come, making it easier for people to access everything it has to offer.”

The Holmfirth Town Centre Access Plan is a partnership project between the council and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority, falling under the broad remit of increasing public transport use and active travel as part of the drive to decarbonisation.
