Wakefield set to approve City Fields disposal

The cabinet is likely to rubber-stamp the sale of 5.36 acres to Yorkshire Choice Homes, which is looking to build 80 affordable houses on the site.

City Fields is a 375-acre urban extension to the east of Wakefield, which sits alongside the existing communities of Stanley, Eastmoor, Agbrigg, Belle Vue and Portobello.

The wider site also includes employment land. Developers with interests include a joint venture between Opus North and Bridges Fund Management, which acquired a 30-acre site from Keyland for a 500,000 sq ft industrial project.

Developers delivering housing include Barratt Homes, Miller Homes, Bellway, Countryside, Avant and Redrow.

The key landholders are the council, Keyland, Stretton Estates, and the City Fields Housing Consortium.

Cllr Denise Jeffery, leader of Wakefield Council, said: “Everyone should have a safe, warm and secure place that they can call home.

“We’ve a strong track record of helping to make this happen. In the last five years, we’ve seen more than 6,800 homes built in our area.

“About 20% of that was affordable housing, helping people get on the property ladder.

“We’re aiming for another 7,000 new homes to be built by 2030, along with the infrastructure needed to support the communities who will live here.

“We know that getting this right at City Fields involves a high-quality housing offer that meets local demand.

“But we realise that needs this to sit alongside the correct infrastructure, which involves all developers delivering on their commitments to invest in the facilities we need to support a thriving community in this part of our district.

“We’ll continue to hold their feet to the fire on that, and we’re expecting to be able to share a significant update on it in the near future.”

Wakefield’s cabinet meeting will take place on 16 December.
