Sheffield campus planned alongside £20m Castlegate regeneration
Sheffield College, the council, SYMCA, and Legal & General have signed an agreement to progress plans for a new educational facility alongside the city’s emerging historical park.
The campus would be located next to the new public park being created on the former Castle Market site.
While details of the college campus remain at an early stage, government documents have previously indicated that the education scheme could include a sixth form college and adult education facilities.
Sheffield College said it was currently reviewing its estate to ensure its campuses remained sustainable and provided appropriate facilities for students and staff.
The college said it was in the “very early planning stages” of the Castlegate project and had no further details to share at this point.
The wider Castlegate scheme is already under construction, with the former Castle Market site being transformed into a new public open space.
The park, now known as Castle Hill Park, is expected to open in summer 2028, having been delayed from its original opening date.
The project has undergone changes following the discovery of archaeological remains, with the revised proposals incorporating the features into the completed park.
The wider Castlegate regeneration is backed by £20m of government funding, announced in 2023.
It is not yet clear how the proposed new campus would affect Sheffield College’s existing estate, which includes its main campus on Granville Road and a site in Hillsborough.
In a statement, Sheffield College said: “We regularly review the college estate to ensure that our campuses are sustainable and fit-for-purpose providing high quality education and training facilities for our students and staff.
“Having signed the statement of intent earlier this year to be part of the Castlegate development, we are very much in the early planning stages so wouldn’t have any further details to share at this stage.”
