Sheffield library redevelopment moves forward
A feasibility programme is expected to go before the city council’s Strategy and Resources Committee in the coming months, focusing on plans to transform Sheffield’s Central Library, City Archives, and Graves Gallery.
Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Museums Trust have spent the past 18 months developing proposals for the grade two* listed building, with support from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority.
The proposed redevelopment would restore and upgrade the 1934 building while improving accessibility and creating new spaces for learning, culture and community activity.
The first step will be the relocation of the Graves Gallery’s art collection to an interim venue in the Heart of the City, which is expected to open next year. The gallery’s current exhibitions will continue until it closes at the end of October.
Key library services will remain in the Graves Building while the long-term proposals are developed, as will the Library Theatre. Other services may move to temporary locations while refurbishment works are carried out.
The plans are intended to improve access throughout the building and create a more modern visitor experience, while retaining its historic character and the collections and services currently housed there.
The council said recent problems with the building’s heating system had accelerated work on interim and temporary arrangements, although planning for the wider redevelopment had already been under way for more than 18 months.
No final decision has yet been made on the future of the building. The next stage of the project will be considered through the council’s formal decision-making process, with further details on the scope, timescales, and service arrangements to be released as plans progress.

“In line with the ambition within our Culture Strategy, we now have a unique opportunity to transform these services for the future, creating a landmark destination that is more accessible, more welcoming and able to offer even more for residents, families, visitors and communities across Sheffield.
“Our ambition is not simply to restore an iconic building, but to unlock its full potential and secure its future for generations to come.
“We are looking forward to sharing the findings of the 18-month feasibility study and setting out the preferred option for the future of this much-loved building.”
