Regenerations plans for Scarborough West Pier
North Yorkshire Council will consider proposals to restore the harbour’s heritage buildings and replace others, with kiosks, offices, and warehouses for the fishing sector alongside parking and public event space.
The regeneration scheme coincides with existing plans for Scarborough Harbour, including infrastructure works for harbour users.
Funding would come from the £20m Towns Funds grant given to Scarborough, as well as North Yorkshire Council’s own investment fund, which has already finances work at the town’s cricket club and teaching facilities at the Construction Skills Village.
Other major projects include improvements around the town’s railway station, work to boost access on the Cinder Track between Whitby and Scarborough, and activities linked to the Wild Eye outdoor and nature project on the coast.
Elsewhere, North Yorkshire Council is also looking for developers to come forward with ideas for parcels of land in its North Bay area.
Plans will be considered by the strategic planning committee on 30 January.
Chairman of the Scarborough Town Board, David Kerfoot, said: “The proposed project is an opportunity to transform the harbour whilst respecting and celebrating Scarborough’s rich fishing heritage.
“Many of the buildings on the West Pier are in desperate need of renovation, and these proposals would dramatically improve the facilities for the local fishing industry, staff, and visitors to the pier.
“It is also imperative that we continue to drive growth in the town, and the plans would make West Pier a must-visit destination for hospitality, leisure, and events which we hope will encourage further investment to boost the local economy.”
