Kirklees publishes Batley blueprint

Pictures of the £14.5m revamp of the West Yorkshire town centre show more pedestrianised areas, public spaces, and an improved market area with designs by landscape architects Influence.

The six key sections being redesigned as part of the project are Market Place, Brunswick Street, the western and eastern, and middle sections of Commercial Street, and Commercial Link, a new green space connecting Commercial Street to the Tesco car park.

The aim is to provide space for events in Market Place and improve connections throughout the town centre.

The designs also include new trees, seating, lighting and play in the town centre.

The project is being funded through £12m from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, alongside £2.5m from Local Centres funding and the West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

Cllr Graham Turner, cabinet member for finance & regeneration, said: “This is a journey that began with engagements and consultations as far back as 2019 and we’re extremely grateful for the inputs we’ve received from the community at each stage – it is their feedback that has shaped this design.”

Shona Hatton, director at Influence Landscape Planning & Design, said: “The designs have considered a wealth of information from previous consultations and engagements, and create a vision that draws on the history and identity of the town to help physically regenerate it for the future.

‘There are many positives about Batley, it has a thriving and growing night time economy, a strong and diverse community and distinguished buildings, but the town centre needs a renewal.”

Members of the public have until 27 January to offer any feedback by filling in an online survey.
