Moxy plans for Hull
Wykeland Group has submitted a revised application for a £25m hotel in the city centre on Waterhouse Lane, directly opposite Connexin Live.
Hull-based Wykeland previously secured consent for a hotel on the site, with updated proposals reflecting the operational requirements of Marriott-owned Moxy’s offer.
The revised plans for a seven-storey hotel with 122 bedrooms were designed by DLA Architecture, with a bar and food area, a gym and relaxation space, and business section on the ground floor.
If approved, the development would complete a wider regeneration programme spanning the site, adjacent to the restored Castle Buildings and the former Earl de Grey pub.
Wykeland’s earlier £2m intervention brought the grade two-listed assets back into use following a period of dereliction.
The planned hotel would represent the first new-build city centre hotel in Hull since the DoubleTree by Hilton Hull opened in 2017, addressing a well-documented shortfall in accommodation provision.
Research commissioned by Wykeland indicates that city centre hotel capacity is reached on around 100 nights each year, displacing visitors to locations outside the city.
Under the proposals, the hotel would be retained in Wykeland ownership and operated by Legacy Hotel Management Services, which manages a portfolio of more than 25 UK hotels.
The Moxy brand targets a contemporary, design-led offer, with an emphasis on informal social spaces and streamlined guest services.
The scheme is expected to play a key role in strengthening Hull’s city centre visitor economy, supporting both leisure and events-driven demand linked to nearby venues.
Jonathan Stubbs, Wykeland’s development director, said: “We’re proud of our work to restore Castle Buildings and the Earl de Grey and the development of a Moxy hotel would complete this prominent development site, as well as being an impressive addition to the Hull skyline.
“The hotel’s location, on the doorstep of the Connexin Live arena and close to Hull’s city centre, marina, Fruit Market, and Old Town, make it the perfect location for both leisure and business visitors.
“These revised plans ensure the building reflects the stylish Moxy brand. Approval of the planning application will pave the way for the development of a high-quality new hotel that the business community, the tourism and hospitality sectors, and visitors to Hull have been crying out for.”
Molly Turpie, senior manager, international hotel development, for Marriott International Hotels, said: “We’re excited at the prospect of creating a hotel that reflects the spirit of the city while delivering the high standards and global reach of Marriott International.
“At Moxy, we believe hotels should be more than just a place to sleep – they should be social hubs, full of energy, creativity and personality. From check-in at the bar to buzzing communal spaces, the brand is all about creating memorable experiences at an accessible price point.
“Hull’s independent spirit and cultural vibrancy make it a natural fit for Moxy, and we’re excited at the prospect of bringing something fresh, playful and distinctive to the city’s hospitality scene.”
