Persimmon earmarks Hemsworth site
The housebuilder is looking to build up to 185 homes on a 26-acre site in the West Yorkshire town.
The land is made up of farmland but also includes council-owned junior football pitches. Wakefield Council agreed to sell the land to Persimmon back in 2024, at which point the developer committed to replacing and improving the sports amenities.
Located off Highfield Road, a formal application for the site has not yet been submitted but a screening opinion request has now been lodged with the council.
The report notes that the housing, footpaths, access roads, and drainage would be spread across 15 acres, with 11 acres dedicated to two replacement pitches and green space.
A former council building on Moorshutt Road will also be demolished and turned into a car park for the estate.
The former coal mining town is around nine miles south of Wakefield and eight miles from Barnsley, and according to Wakefield’s local plan will see 820 homes built across five sites in the next decade.
