Barratt bids for 1,200 home Green Belt site in Sheffield

The housebuilder has thrown its hat into the ring with a newly proposed location in Mosborough, as Sheffield City Council stages hearings this week to determine which designated sites will be reallocated for housing in its Local Plan.

The 210-acre plot is not among the previously selected 14 Green Belt sites that have been earmarked for consideration.

Under its David Wilson brand, the housebuilder is looking to build the new estate between Plumbley Lane and High Lane in the village, noting it as ‘suitable, deliverable, and available’.

Once complete, Sheffield’s Local Plan will set the scene for development over the next 14 years.

Following this week’s hearings by a government inspectorate, a preliminary report will be released with suggestions that will go before public consultation early next year.

After that, a final report will be prepared and will go before Sheffield City Council for a final decision. The anticipated timeline for that is summer next year.

Government targets for the council included 38,000 new homes and 654 acres of employment land, which left Sheffield with a deficit of 3,529 homes and 130 acres of industrial land once all the brownfield sites had been accounted for – hence, the search for potential Green Belt to build on.

The current total area of Sheffield’s Green Belt is 22,400 acres and the changes proposed by the council in its last report on the matter would result in around 800 acres being removed, roughly 3.6% of the total area.
