Dewsbury Bus Station revamp reaches steel signing phase

Being delivered by Willmott Dixon, the £23m transport hub will be one of the first in the Weaver Network, which aims to create a joined-up transport system for buses, trains, and trams in West Yorkshire.

Construction started in March 2025 and since then a temporary station has been built, the new foundations have been laid, and the steel frames have been installed.

Willmott Dixon is working with West Yorkshire Combined Authority in partnership with Kirklees Council, with the project a key part in the Council’s wider Dewsbury Blueprint, which aims to boost footfall by making the town centre more attractive and easier to get around.

The works will deliver a fully accessible modern bus station, with better real-time information, improved safety and security features, and accessible facilities.

The new Dewsbury Bus Station is expected to open in autumn of this year, with final completion of all external parts due in spring 2027.

Weaver buses are expected to be operational from April 2027, by which time the Mayor hopes to have brought the bus network under public control.

Chris Yates, Yorkshire director at Wilmott Dixon, said: “Signing the steel at Dewsbury Bus Station is a proud moment for our teams and reflects the fantastic progress to date.

“We’re already seeing real benefits for the Dewsbury community, with £6.5m of our project spent with local businesses, more than 400 hours of employment support delivered, four new job opportunities created for Dewsbury residents and 135 weeks of apprenticeship training secured through partnerships with local colleges.”

Cllr Moses Crook, Kirklees Council deputy leader and cabinet member for Transport and Housing, said: “Together with our continued investment in the transport network and wider regeneration initiatives taking place across Dewsbury town centre, this development will form an essential part of creating a transport system that meets the needs of everyone who lives and works in Kirklees.”

Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin said: “This fantastic new bus station will deliver safer, greener and more reliable journeys across Kirklees and beyond.”
