Wakefield sets out Economic Growth Plan

The plan, which will be considered by the council’s cabinet, sets out how Wakefield intends to support growth by helping businesses expand and improving access to training, apprenticeships, and workplace development opportunities, as well as housing.

The strategy will build on the district’s existing strengths, including its transport connections, manufacturing sector, logistics industry, and growing cultural economy.

Alongside business growth, the plan highlights the need to improve access to housing and local services to support communities and enable future economic development.

The strategy provides a framework for future investment across employment space, housing, and supporting infrastructure, while placing skills development at the centre of efforts to meet the needs of local employers.

The council said the plan will help create the conditions for sustainable growth by bringing together businesses, residents, and partners to support investment and improve opportunities across the district.

Cllr Andrew Wakefield, cabinet member for strategic housing, skills and business growth, said: “Our new Economic Growth Plan has been designed to help create a more prosperous district. One where people can achieve their business ambitions and career goals in a variety of different ways.

“We want to make it easier for new and existing businesses to invest and grow in our district. We’re here to help remove obstacles and cut any unnecessary red tape.

“The plan focuses on attracting the type of new investment that leads to more high-quality and better paid jobs for residents.

“A key part of the plan is to bring in more investment, grow key sectors in our district, and help businesses to start, expand, and succeed in Wakefield. Creating more secure and skilled jobs so that local people benefit from a stronger, more productive economy.

“Our message is clear. Wakefield is open for business.”
