Work starts on 120-home Quaker Retreat conversion
The former healthcare facility on Heslington Road, York, is being developed by PJ Livesey and will have conversions within the grade two-listed buildings, while new homes will be built on the north east side of the estate.
Phase one of the work will focus on the north east section, and will deliver eight one- to three-bedroom converted homes within Garrow Hill House and its surrounding buildings, and 13 new-build three- to five-bedroom homes.
The first homes are expected to be ready by summer next year.
Set within 32 acres of green space, The Retreat was founded in 1792 by the Tuke family, and focused on providing alternative treatments to the somewhat inhumane ones of the time.
The facility went on to influence care practices around the world, and operated up until 2020.
Planning permission for the development was granted last year.
Now, more than 230 years later, the heritage developer is going to turn it into a new community with an emphasis on green space and serenity, in keeping with its original principles.
Landscaped grounds will include tranquility gardens and an orchard, and outdoor spaces that have been closed to the public will be opened up.
Georgina Lynch, managing director at PJ Livesey, said: “The Retreat is rich in history, architectural significance, and emotional connection. We’ve been immersed in the story and structure of this site since it first came to our attention, and we’re incredibly proud to be entrusted with its next chapter.
“We know just how much this site means to the city, and our aim is to honour that legacy through respectful, design-led restoration – delivering not just exceptional homes, but a historic haven; a true sanctuary for modern living inspired by the past.”
