Helmsley finds F&B occupier for Cumberland House
The developer is in the process of restoring the historic York building and, following the council’s rejection of a residential proposal, has now pivoted to the hospitality scene.
Facilitated by property consultants Colenso, Helmsley met with the owners of York restaurant Lil’s Bar and Bistro, Shaun and Jamie-Leigh Binns, with the duo agreeing to launch an F&B venture.
A planning application has now been submitted for the scheme.
Overlooking the River Ouse, the former office building is located at the corner of Cumberland Street and King’s Staith, close to a mix of riverside bars and restaurants.
Previously, Helmsley was looking to develop what it describes as a ‘sensitive residential scheme that honoured the grade one-listed building’s original use.’
This proposal was rejected, despite, says the developer, ‘having strong interest from a purchaser, who was willing to invest significantly in bringing the property back to life, and backing from conservation officers.’
Tom Riddolls, development surveyor at Helmsley Group, said: “It’s fantastic to have Shaun and Jamie on board to continue Helmsley Group’s vision of bringing York’s vacant heritage buildings back into use.
“This project is not just about preservation; it’s about protecting York’s unique character for future generations.
“We are now all hoping for swift support for our plans from York City Council so that this landmark property can finally be restored and given a meaningful, sustainable future.”
James Ratcliffe, head of commercial agency at Colenso, said: “We are incredibly fortunate to have found such dedicated stakeholders in Shaun and Jamie.
“Their commitment to the area and enthusiasm for this opportunity are exactly what’s needed to breathe new life into this important building.”
