East Yorkshire’s Jock’s Lodge highway reopens
The £86.9m improvement scheme on the A1079 near Beverley is the largest construction project ever commissioned by the council and was carried out by contractor Graham.
Following two-and-a-half years of construction, traffic restrictions on the road were removed on the evening of Friday 11 September, allowing the A1079/Jock’s Lodge roundabout and its approaches to fully reopen.
The Department for Transport awarded £40.7m to the project, with the council investing £46.2m.
The remaining restrictions on the A164 are expected to be removed in the coming weeks, marking the full opening of the scheme.
Work began in January 2024 to improve the junction of the A164 Hull to Beverley road and A1079 Hull to York road, one of the area’s busiest and most congested locations.
The scheme has included a new dual carriageway on the A164 between Beverley and Skidby roundabout, a new road bridge at Bentley carrying traffic over a new link road, and a new roundabout on the A1079.
More than 660,000 tonnes of earth were moved during construction along the 4km project route.
The works have also included more than 7.5km of new road surfacing, over 3km of drainage and seven drainage ponds, alongside around 128,000 trees and shrubs.
Six new pedestrian and equestrian crossing points have been delivered, together with improvements to more than 3km of cycle path and a new 3km public right of way.
Cllr Michael Lee, the council’s cabinet member for housing, infrastructure and communications, said: “This has been a monumental task for our project team at the council and for our contractor GRAHAM, but they have done an amazing job to deliver this impressive new highway.
“I want to say a big thank you to drivers for their patience and understanding through all the construction work, but I’m sure they will soon benefit from smoother journeys on this route to the rest of the East Riding.”
