And finally… Highland Laddie raises the bar
It’s cheers all round at the recently re-opened establishment on Cavendish Street in Leeds, which has been crowned The Good Food Guide’s number one pub in Britain.
The 100-year-old watering hole, nestled between Burley Road and Kirkstall Road, has proven that like a fine wine, pubs get better with age.
Current owners Sam Pullan and Nicole Deighton, who also own local restaurant Empire Café, bought the pub after it closed in 2023 and re-opened its doors to the public in April.
It now focuses on serving up classic ales, good food, and has installed an oyster bar, with an eclectic menu that The Good Food Guide says ‘raises the bar for casual yet creative pub dining.’
Mr Pullan and Ms Deighton said: “We are all absolutely over the moon to be recognised as The Good Food Guide’s No. 1 pub in Britain.
“We are even more thrilled to be flying the flag for Leeds and Yorkshire.”
The Highland Laddie wasn’t the only Yorkshire pub to make the cut – here are the six that featured, with ranking:
- The Highland Laddie, Leeds – National ranking: 1
- The Abbey Inn, North Yorkshire – National ranking: 8
- The Pipe and Glass, East Yorkshire – National ranking: 25
- The Star Inn, Harome – National ranking: 34
- The General Tarleton, North Yorkshire – National ranking: 44
- The Owl Hawnby, North Yorkshire – National ranking: 88
