Aldi set for approval in Norton

North Yorkshire Council is likely to grant permission for the 20,000 sq ft store on land previously given the green light for 62 homes.

Approved back in 2014, the residential scheme was being brought forward by a private investor and was abandoned due to viability issues.

Located on Commercial Street in the town centre, the site has the railway to its north and is otherwise surrounded by residential and commercial buildings within the Norton Conservation Area.

Designed by Projekt Architects and with Avison Young advising on the scheme, the shop itself will have a sales area measuring around 13,000 sq ft and an 89-space car park.

Aldi is hoping to start construction at the end of this year, with completion in late 2026.

Previously, the dormant site was occupied by an ATS Euromaster tyre repair centre, which has been demolished, with the rest of the plot made up of scrubland.

Plans will go before the council at its meeting on Thursday, with a recommendation to approve, mirroring a public consultation with more than 500 participants that showed an 89% support rate for the scheme.

Aldi currently has stores in York, Scarborough, Bridlington, and Pocklington.

A spokesperson for Aldi, said: “We’ve worked closely with the council officers and other parties during the planning process and are delighted that there are no objections from statutory consultees.

“We are hopeful that our plans for a new Aldi food store in Norton will be approved in line with the officer’s recommendation by members of the Area Committee.”

Why not build the ALDI and have 62 apartments above? This country’s land use policy is so self destructive it’s embarrassing.
