Work underway at Huddersfield Bus Station
The £28m revamp is being carried out by Willmott Dixon for the West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Kirklees Council ahead of the launch of the integrated transport Weaver Network in May next year.
The upgraded bus station will be more accessible and energy efficient, with improved digital technology to allow for real-time bus and rail information screens, and more accessible toilets.
There will also be a new entrance canopy, solar panels and a green roof, along with new cycle parking, upgraded shop fronts and public space improvements outside the building.
Willmott Dixon secured the project via the SCAPE framework and construction is due to complete in Spring 2028.
Huddersfield will be the third Weaver Network bus station in Kirklees, with Heckmondwike and Dewsbury bus stations both due to open later this year, alongside the already renovated £20.5m Halifax Bus Station in Calderdale.
Mayor of West Yorkshire, Tracy Brabin said: “We will transform Huddersfield Bus Station into a state-of-the art facility the town can be proud of.
“Along with our investments into Heckmondwike and Dewsbury bus stations, we’re improving everyday journeys for people across the region.
“This is part of our plan for a better-connected West Yorkshire with the Weaver Network at its heart – a seamless way to get around, no matter how you choose to travel.”
Yorkshire director for Willmott Dixon, Chris Yates said: “We’re passionate about creating employment opportunities and work experience as part of our projects, and this is no different.
“We’re aiming to provide 584 employment support hours, 177 hours of educational support in local schools and colleges, 398 apprentice weeks and 31 weeks of work experience during the station transformation.”
