SYMCA partners with Hitachi on trams
Step one of the 15-year partnership will see Hitachi Rail upgrade operational systems, to optimise timetable delivery across the Supertram network.
The Technology Partner Framework Agreement will start in September and aims to enhance the county’s tram network through digitally enabled solutions.
Passengers will also be able to track live tram updates, once complete.
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has a wider goal to futureproof the region’s public transport system, with £1.5bn recently assigned to the region’s trams by central government.
Around a year ago, SYMCA also pledged £5m for a rail replacement programme on its Supertram network, carried out by VolkerRail.
Hitachi will use digital solutions to enhance the operational efficiency of the county’s light rail network, and to improve passenger experience, as well as focusing on creating a sustainable network.
The Supertram network consists of 50 stations across four lines, covering Sheffield and Rotherham.
Andy Bell, vice president and GTS managing director, Hitachi Rail UK, said: “This 15-year partnership represents more than a contract, it’s a long-term commitment to South Yorkshire.
“We’re bringing together our globally proven technologies, transformational delivery expertise, and local presence in the South Yorkshire region to help deliver a stronger, smarter Supertram network for the future.”
Tom Howard, director of transport development and capital delivery, from SYMCA, said: “Supertram is a key component of the South Yorkshire public transport network, and since operations returned to our control last year, we have set out a programme of investment to ensure the system is fit for the future.
“This strategic partnership with Hitachi will ensure we can work collaboratively to harness the latest technology from an internationally experienced supplier in the Light Rail sector, delivering real benefits for our passengers over the lifetime of the framework.”
