Stantec commissioned for Goole-Leeds public transport study
With increasing commuter- and leisure-led demand, the engineering firm has been tasked with investigating better links between East and West Yorkshire.
East Yorkshire Council has asked Stantec to focus the study on improving public transport between Goole, the Lower Aire Valley, and Leeds, looking into rail and bus links connecting Goole with Knottingley and then onwards to Leeds, Wakefield, and Hull.
Covering road and rail routes specifically along Goole, Rawcliffe, Snaith, Hensall, Eggborough, Knottingley, Pontefract, Featherstone, Castleford, and Normanton, the analysis will take into account both commuter and leisure travel needs.
Employment growth at sites such as the Humber Freeport, large-scale industrial projects like Siemens Mobility and Metsä Tissue, and substantial residential developments in Goole and Howden, which between them have more than 2,600 homes planned, have prompted the study, with better transport links seen as a sure-fire way to access a larger workforce.
At the same time, leisure destinations such as Xscape and Junction 32 retail outlet are adding to the demand for leisure-led transport options between East and West Yorkshire.

Cllr Anne Handley, leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “Goole and the surrounding communities are seeing major investment in new housing and jobs… Reliable, sustainable public transport is vital to connect residents with these opportunities and ensure businesses can access the workforce they need.”
