Magna tram-train reaches key milestone

Rotherham’s new £10m station is taking shape, with lift shafts and a pedestrian bridge now in place.

Funded through a Transforming Cities grant, the scheme is being delivered by Barnsley-based AmcoGiffen and will form part of the tram-train route connecting Sheffield and Rotherham.

Expected to open in early 2026, the project has been developed by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority in partnership with Network Rail and Supertram.

It will be the first addition to the tram-train network since it launched in 2018 and is part of a £110m investment in Supertram upgrades by 2027.

Further plans under the Rotherham Gateway Station project will expand connectivity between Rotherham town centre, Magna, Sheffield Arena, and the Olympic Legacy Park.

Much of the steelwork needed for the job was sourced from AmcoGiffen’s in-house steelwork fabrication facility.

Aiming to improve transport connectivity for residents and those visiting the Magna Science Adventure Centre, it is also hoped it will ease traffic in the Lower Don Valley.

South Yorkshire’s Mayor, Oliver Coppard, said: “This is about more than concrete and steel. It’s about making sure our public transport network works for everyone – accessible, joined-up, and designed around the needs of our communities.”

Leader of Rotherham Council, cllr Chris Read, said: “The new Tram Train station at Magna is a further step forward for Rotherham and the wider region – improving the way our public transport network works, and strengthening our plans for more jobs and homes along the corridor along Templeborough and beyond.”
