Funding approved for Rotherham Gateway
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority has approved more than £11m of development funding for the town’s new train station, allowing the council to crack on with design work, land assembly, and procurement preparation.
The station will sit on the main line between Sheffield and Leeds, and will be the first time in decades Rotherham town centre will be connected to the rail network.
The station will be located at Parkgate and will have both rail and tram services, also providing a transport link for the Bassingthorpe Farm development site, which will potentially see around 2,500 homes built on former Green Belt land.
Expected to cost anywhere between £130-170m, the two main design options at the moment show a two-platform and a four-platform layout, as well as a tram-stop.
£10m from the Town Deal programme will fund land acquisition and planning consents.
